SLELTA conference in August

The Sri Lanka English Language Teachers Association (SLELTA) will hold their 5th International SLELTA Conference from August 7 to 10, 2008, at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Maharagama. The Ministry of Education and several private sector organizations are sponsoring this event, which is held every two years.

The conference is open to all those in the field of English Langauge Teaching (ELT) interested in teaching and promoting English. It is an opportunity for teachers of English to interact with Sri Lankan and international professionals and researchers in the field, present papers, and join in the discussions.


Separate workshop for teachers of young learners

It is also a teacher training event, to find out the latest trends and developments in Teaching English as a Second Language in Sri Lanka and abroad.

The theme of the conference is The Learning Teacher , and its sub themes include Teacher Development, Bilingual Teaching, Sri Lankan English, Teaching English Literature, and IT for English, and teaching Young Learners.

Prof Penny Ur, an eminent writer of ELT textbooks such as Discussions that Work: Task-centred Fluency Practice and Five-Minute Activities: A Resource Book of Short Activities, will be the keynote speaker at this event. Prof. Jo Lo Bianco, an experienced practitioner in bilingual teaching from Australia, Prof. Sabiha Munsoor from Pakistan, and Dr. Amol Padwad from India will be plenary speakers. Prof.

Ryhana Raheem and Dr Hemamala Ratwatte of the Open University and Dr. Dushyanthi Mendis of the University of Colombo will be plenary speakers from Sri Lanka.

The conference fee for the conference is Rs. 2,500 for SLELTA members and Rs. 3500.00 for non-SLELTA members. In addition to the main event, there will be a one-day workshop especially designed for teachers of young learners on August 7 th at an additional cost of? Rs. 1000.00. Separate certificates of attendance will be awarded to the attendees of these two events.

Registration forms are available at the Open University of Sri Lanka, the English Language Teaching Unit of the University of Kelaniya and with all SLELTA executive committee members.
