Watawala Plantations presents houses to tsunami families

Watawala Plantations PLC, a company under the Sunshine Holdings Ltd.,
a joint venture partnership with the Tata Tea, strives to achieve
corporate goals based on sustainable development which it believes,
rests on three pillars, namely social, environmental and economic goals
of the company. Very often social and environmental obligations are
sidelined for economic goals.
However, Watawala Plantations PLC aims to balance the three.
In its quest to serve the community to achieve Social Goals in
shouldering the Corporate Social Responsibility, Watawala Plantations
PLC undertook a project to build and donate houses to families affected
by the tsunami in partnership with a few clients and also the employees
of the company.
The partners in this noble exercise, apart from the 14,000 workforce,
were Ahmed Tea, Bell Tea, Ambo Exports, Seasons Hong kong, Tetley UK,
Tata Communications Lanka Ltd., and Intertec Engineering.
A five-acre site in Batticaloa was selected where the company plans
to build 25 houses. Five houses at a cost of Rs. 4 million which
includes the cost of land will be built under phase 1 of the project.
Each donee got a house with two bed rooms, a living room, kitchen and
an outside toilette.
each house is 400 square feet.
