Do you know? :
Why we develop a bulge on the skin after a mosquito bite
First, you must know how a mosquito bites us, to find the reason. You
must be aware that when it comes to mosquitoes, the females are deadlier
than the males. They are the ones that sting you!
When a female mosquito pierces our skin to drink our blood, it first
injects a small amount of saliva into the blood veins before drawing the
blood. Now why do you think it does so?
The saliva makes penetration easier and also prevents the blood from
clotting. You may have noticed that if we prick or cut our hands or any
part of the body where blood comes out, it dries or clots very fast. So,
mosquitoes cannot let this happen because they need to drink blood.
That is why these miniature vampires introduce saliva into the veins
first.
The bulges that spring up after the bite is an allergic reaction to
this saliva. In most cases the itching sensation subsides within minutes
but in some cases it lasts longer.
How sound is caused by cracking of knuckles
There is a lubricating fluid which prevents the two bones which form
the knuckles from grating against each other. This fluid known as the
synovial fluid contains tiny bubbles which cannot be seen by the naked
eye. So, when the knuckle bones remain close together, the fluid is
under pressure and the bubbles remain tiny.
But when one clenches his/her fist, the bones are pulled apart. This
causes the bubbles to join together and form one large bubble.
Then when we crack the knuckles, the pressure changes and makes the
bubble burst, producing a loud noise.
Do you crack your knuckles? There is a belief that cracking your
knuckles regularly could make them large and unsightly. So, if you are
in the habit of doing this, stop it unless you want to end up with
ugly-looking fingers. It may even lead to artheritis, according to recent
research.
Why the eyes of some animals glow in the dark
You may have wondered why some animals have eyes that glow in the
dark; some a reddish glow and some yellowish or whitish colour. The
animals don’t have eyes that glow on their own.
The glow is only a reflection of light from another source. Even this
reflection takes place because there is a layer of crystal line
substance in the eyes of many animals. This substance which has the
ability to reflect light also helps them to see in the dark. This is why
they can see better than us in the dark.
The difference in the colour of light reflected from the eyes is due
to the different number of blood vessels in the eyes.
Animals that have many blood vessels will reflect a reddish glow and
those with a lesser number a yellowish or whitish glow.
