Awareness program to protect Kalu Wandura species
An awareness program for children on protection of Kalu Wandura
species will be held today at the Susiriwardhanaramaya Temple in
Kahahena, Horana. The Kalu Wandura (Western purple-faced langur) seen
from Awissawella to Kalutara is a species unique to the Western Province
of Sri Lanka.
According to the IUCN’s ‘Red Book’, it is among the 25 primates in
the world that are critically endangered and faced with extinction in
the near future.
The main threat to this animal is the loss of habitat owing to
unplanned clearing of jungles and its consequent conflict with humans. |
