Police storm into final with a 4-2 win over Ratnam SC

SOCCER: Police SC powered their way to the finals of the Holcim FA Cup final with a rousing 4-2 victory over Ratnam SC in the second semi-finals played at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place yesterday.

Police will now meet Civil Services Force who beat Sri Lanka Air force in the first semi-final played on Friday in the final to be played at the same venue.

Both sides played a fast open game from the outset and Ratnam SC failed to grab easy scoring chances due mainly to poor shooting by their ace striker Kasun Jayasuriya. However Ratnam SC draw the first blood in the 25th minute when Kasun Jayasuriya heads in beautifully off a well directed delivery from Chanthura Maduranga from the right flank.

Police pressed hard and levelled the scores 1-all through a ‘gift goal’. Ratnam SC defender B. Shivanka in a bid to clear the ball sent in by Police SC, M. Naushad miscued his kick and the ball went into their own goal. At half time scored stood 1-all.

Shortly after the breather Police took the lead 2-1 when Rajitha Jayavilal pushed the ball home going solo after receiving a regular pass. Police attacked vehemently and increased the lead 3-1 through fine goal from Mohamed Naushad. Samath Pathiran of Police was shown the red card for dangerous play in the 30th minute of the second half and the Police side who reduced to ten. But they continued to prove their mettle with methodical play. In the 75th minute Police SC increased the lead and put the issue beyond double when Rajitha Jayavilal scored his maiden goal.

In the dying minutes of the game Kasun Jayasuriya scored for Ratnam SC to make 4-2. For Police SC it was a very creditable victory outplaying the experienced Ratnam SC who fielded several national players.
