Police storm into final with a 4-2 win over Ratnam SC

SOCCER: Police SC powered their way to the finals of the Holcim FA
Cup final with a rousing 4-2 victory over Ratnam SC in the second
semi-finals played at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place yesterday.
Police will now meet Civil Services Force who beat Sri Lanka Air
force in the first semi-final played on Friday in the final to be played
at the same venue.
Both sides played a fast open game from the outset and Ratnam SC
failed to grab easy scoring chances due mainly to poor shooting by their
ace striker Kasun Jayasuriya. However Ratnam SC draw the first blood in
the 25th minute when Kasun Jayasuriya heads in beautifully off a well
directed delivery from Chanthura Maduranga from the right flank.
Police pressed hard and levelled the scores 1-all through a ‘gift
goal’. Ratnam SC defender B. Shivanka in a bid to clear the ball sent in
by Police SC, M. Naushad miscued his kick and the ball went into their
own goal. At half time scored stood 1-all.
Shortly after the breather Police took the lead 2-1 when Rajitha
Jayavilal pushed the ball home going solo after receiving a regular
pass. Police attacked vehemently and increased the lead 3-1 through fine
goal from Mohamed Naushad. Samath Pathiran of Police was shown the red
card for dangerous play in the 30th minute of the second half and the
Police side who reduced to ten. But they continued to prove their mettle
with methodical play. In the 75th minute Police SC increased the lead
and put the issue beyond double when Rajitha Jayavilal scored his maiden
goal.
In the dying minutes of the game Kasun Jayasuriya scored for Ratnam
SC to make 4-2. For Police SC it was a very creditable victory
outplaying the experienced Ratnam SC who fielded several national
players.
