S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen receives trophy for services to promote rugby in Kandy.

SPORTS AWARD: Kandy Sports Club - the organisers of the Singer SriLankan International Rugby Sevens will honour our Kandy Sports Correspondent for Sunday Observer and Daily News S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen by awarding him a trophy in recognition of his services for the promotion of rugby.

The presentation will take place at Singer SriLankan Airlines International Rugby Sevens at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium in Kandy today (Sunday).

He has been writing for the Lake House Group for the past thirty years, covering not only rugby, but all other sports played in the area.

He has also covered the Singer SriLankan Rugby Sevens since the very inception in 1998 and has been doing so without a break. Apart from this, he has also the unique record of covering every rugby match played by Kandy Sports Club at Nittawela since 1978, underlying his love for the game. Jiffrey Abdeen is a well-known personality in the field of sports, not only in Kandy but in the entire upcountry area. He has covered rugby, cricket and motor sports at club level and also other sports like swimming athletics, hockey, soccer, boxing, badminton, table tennis, basketball at school level.

In motor sports, he is a well known figure, covering motor racing events such as Foxhill Supercross, Radella Hill Climb, Mahagastota Hill Climb, Kotmale Hill Climb, Eliyakande Hill Climb, Vace Park Hill Climb, St. James Hill Climb, Karundapona Hill Climb, Arena Supercross at Embilipitiya, Talduwa races, Road races in Kandy, Koggala, Mihintale and Nuwara Eliya and a number of races at the Pannala International racing track. A high point of his career was when he covered the Japanese GT motor races at the Sepbang circuit in Malaysia in 2001 in which Sri Lanka's racing ace Dilantha Malagamuwa participated.

When the Victoria golf course was opened at Rajawella in 1998, he was quick to take to coverage of that sport too. He has covered the SAARC Golf Championship, SriLankan Golf Classics, SriLankan Golf Festival and other golf championships organised at Victoria. In short he has experience in covering every sport played in the hill capital from school to club level, a record worthy of mention.
