Matheesha bowls Ananda to victory over Thomians

Prolific left-arm leg spinner Matheesha Perera returned impressive match figures of (11-108) as Ananda College beat S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia by five wickets in their annual inter-school cricket encounter which ended at Ananda Mawatha, last evening.

Perera, who had snared over 60 wickets before the start of the game, proved unplayable for the Thomians as he claimed outstanding figures of 6-63 in the visitors second innings to add to his first-innings figures of 5 for 54 to make the difference between the two schools.

Ananda set a challenging victory target of 96 off a maximum 13 overs reached their goal with just two deliveries to spare on the back of an unbeaten 43 from number three batsman Prabodha Seneviratne.

Earlier Ananda resuming from their overnight total of 87 for 6 in reply to S. Thomas’ first-innings of 126 were bowled out for 157 for a slender lead of 31 runs.

But the Thomians fared no better failing to top their first-innings total in the face of Matheesha Perera’s incisive spell.

Thus, Ananda coasted to their sixth successive win in as many games and their eighth overall for the 2008-2009 inter-school season.

S. Thomas’: 126 & 126 all out (S. Saleem 40, S. Liyanarachchi 20, Matheesha Perera 6-63, Sameera Wijesuriya 2-12).

Ananda: (87-6 contd.) 157 all out (Dinesh Chandimal 31, Prabodha Seneviratne 29, Sameera Wijesuriya 36, Matheesha Perera 22, M. Peiris 4-8, C. Fonseka 2 for 48, C. Pathirana 2 for 18) and 99 for 5 in 12.4 overs (Prabodha Seneviratne 43 n.o., Dinesh Chandimal 19 n.o., C. Pathirana 2 for 35).


Royal-Joes match ends in a draw

Set to make 225 runs in 45 overs St. Joseph’s were 193 for 5 in their drawn school cricket encounter against Royal at Darley Road yesterday.

The Joes who were 133 for 9 overnight in reply to Royal’s 172 were all out for 135 adding two runs to their overnight score.

Royal batting for the second time made a bold declaration at 188 for 7 leaving the Josephians to get 225 runs in 45 overs. Sahan Hettiarachchi (47) and Kusal Perera (53) set the pace for the Royalists prior to the declaration.

The Josephians who began their run chase around 2.30 pm did not make a genuine attempt to go for the runs after the Royal sporting declaration which required just five runs per over. Hareen Silva 47, Nishika de Silva 34, Rosco Thattil 27 n.o. and K. Chaturanga 37 n.o. were the main run getters for the Joes in the second innings.

Royal: 172 and 188 for 7 dec. (S. Hettiarachchi 47, Kusal Perera 53, B. Rajapakse 20, Y. Abeykoon 17, H. Mowjood 13, S. Weerasinghe 2 for 48, T. Rajasooriya 2 for 33).

St. Joseph’s: 135 (S.Weerasinghe 50, R. Thattil 35 n.o., H. Mowjood 3 for 35, Y. Abeykoon 2 for 18, L. Randevala 2 for 19) and 193 for 5 (Hareen Silva 47, N. De Silva 34, R. Thattil 27 n.o., K. Chaturanga 37 n.o., Y. Abeykoon 2 for 45, H. Mowjood 2 for 60).


Bold reply by Cambrians

The inter - school cricket match between St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya and Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa ended in a draw yesterday at Bambalapitiya.

Chasing a huge Peterite first innings score of 308, the Cambrian batsmen did well to reply with a decent total of 264, leaving a deficit of 44 runs.

Resuming from their overnight score of 160 for 3 wickets Prince of Wales however, failed to capitalise on that good start with the rest of the 7 batsmen managing to add only 104 runs between them.

Overnight batsman Isuru de Mel added a further 22 runs to top score with 63. But the batsman to shine on the second day was Malshan Fernando who contributed almost half the runs scored with an unbeaten well made 50. The bowlers to impress for St. Peter’s were paceman Chathura Peiris who claimed 4 wickets for 92 runs with A. Mackie (2 for 42) and A. Fernando (2 for 37) also being among the wickets.

Batting a second time St. Peter’s batsmen did not find things easy ending the day on 187 for 8 wickets with Angelo Perera top scoring with 88 and D. Perera 46.

Among the wickets for the Cambrians were M. Fernando (2 for 26) and B. Alwis (2 for 27).

St. Peter’s: 1st innings 308 and 187 for 8 wickets at stumps (Angelo Perera 88, D.Perera 46, M.Fernando 2 for 26, B.Alwis 2 for 27).

Prince of Wales 1st innings 264 all out (Isuru de Mel 63, Malshan Fernando 50 n.o., Thilina Chandima 35, Isuru Thilina 22, Shehan Dumullage 20, Chathura Peiris 4 for 92, A. Mackie 2 for 42, A.Fernando 2 for 37).


Drawn match at Moratuwa

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa drew with Thurstan College, Colombo in their under 19 inter-school cricket tournament match played at Moratuwa.

Remaining at 114 for no loss in day two Indika Massalage and Shehan Kamaleen put on 137 runs for the first wicket and visitors were all out for 315 runs. T. Madurapperuma contributed 50 runs. Sanitha de Mel bagged 5 for 79. However Thurstanites led by 45 runs in their first essay.

Sebs in their second essay were 184 for 7 when the stumps were drawn with Charith Fernando making 59 runs. Indika Massalage captured 5 for 46 for the visitors.

St. Sebastian’s: 270 and 184 for 7 (Charith Fernando 59, D. Rodrigo 40, Anuk de Alwis 24, Indika Massalage 5 for 46).

Thurstan: 315 (Indika Massalage 82, Shehan Kamaleen 66, N. Darshana 39, T. Madurapperuma 50, J. Javed 32, Sanitha de Mel 5 for 79, Anoj Gayantha 2 for 73).
