Suspension of errant official: D.S. starts with a straight bat
Cricket has come full circle undergoing change in a spin of the
wheel, all anew from the captaincy of the team to the sport's
administrative arm in testing times. If the sudden departure of Mahela
Jayawardene from the captaincy touched an emotional chord followed by
the horrendous terrorist attack on our cricket team in Pakistan, the
induction of Kumar Sangakkara as Sri Lanka's next captain and on its
heels the entry of new names in an interim committee to administer the
sport has been eventful. Added to which an errant official running amock
at the cricket board during the interim committee's inaugural meeting
last week.
That the cricket board can very well do without this type of jackass
red herrings who have reportedly stripped it of its honourable
gentemanly name by the shady deals we hear by the day must go without
saying at a time SLC has a plateful in its hands.
And in that respect new Chairman D.S. de Silva deserves to be
complimented for starting with a straight bat in putting this errant
official, namely B.H.Perera referred to as Podi Sir, a name he has
earned for his notoriety in handling things to suit him, in his place by
suspending his services.
Indeed, it is a fine start for D.S. as he was well known when he sent
down his leg breaks during an era when Sri Lanka was striving to catch
the international eye.
D.S. has set the tone for discipline at the cricket board, and he
should not hesitate to take action against any other errant officials.
