New Year strengthens bonds of friendship
This New Year is more meaningful to the extent that it strengthens
the bonds of friendship among our people. This comes from the many
commitments made towards achieving the much sought after peace, by the
government and the people, says President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a Sinhala
and Hindu New Year message.
The message:
"At a time when the country awaits the dawn of peace and prosperity
we are happy to welcome the Sinhala and Hindu New Year which brings the
promise of a new awakening to our people. "Today our people from the
North and South, East and West will observe the traditions of the New
Year ushering in a new spring of abundance to the entire nation.
The people of the East who already enjoy their freedom will greet the
New Year with the traditional pot of boiling milk gathering the new
harvest of liberation. Similarly, the people of the North will see in
this New Year propitious signs of a new freedom and prosperity that
awaits them.
"The New Year brings with it an environment of friendship and sharing
enhanced by the fruits and flowers of nature that enrich the spirit of
festivity. This New Year is more meaningful to the extent that it
strengthens the bonds of friendship among our people. This comes from
the many commitments made towards achieving the much sought after peace,
by the government and the people.
"The milk of good hope that flows in every home at the dawn of the
New Year augurs plenty and prosperity for the country, as well as the
honour and respect of the world. It is my belief that all our people
will join in observing the age old traditions of the New Year with a
resolution to move our nation towards a future of peace and plenty.
"At this time of national holiday and festivity I extend my heartfelt
thanks to all persons who remain at their posts to ensure protection,
especially to the members of the Armed Forces and the Police who
continue their great sacrifices for the country and the people.
"I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year." |
