SL Davis Cup team win all 3 matches

Sri Lanka comprising Harshana Godamanne, Raji Rajapakse, Sanka Atukorala and Guyanga Weerasekera have acquitted themselves creditably well in the 2009 Asia/Oceamia group III Davis Cup tie, which is on in Syria from 13 to 19 April. Sri Lanka, in Group 'B' along with Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iran, did extremely well to win all their 3 matches, whilst Syria won 2 and lost the third to Sri Lanka in the 2009 Asia Oceania Group III Davis Cup tie against Saudia Arabia won Iran - with Iran losing all their 3 matches.

In Group `A' made up of Pacific Oceania, Lebanon, Singapore and Jatikjstan Pacific Oceania won all their three matches, Lebanon won 2 and lost the third to Pacific Oceania. Tajikistan won the odd match against Singapore who lost all their three matches.The four top teams viz. Pacific Oceania, Lebanon Sri Lanka and Syria have advanced to a 'promotion' pool from which the two highest placed nations are promoted to Asia Oceania Group II in 2010.

Bottam two teams in each pool viz. Tajikistan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Iran will advance to a `relegation' pool from which the two lowest placed nations are relegated to Asia Oceania Group IV in 2010.


Rider hits official

A motor racing official was hit by a rider who was taking the case of another rider after a heated argument at the conclusion of the 75th anniversary of the Mahagastota Speed Hill Climb organised by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club held at Mahagastota recently.

The General secretary of the Sri Lanka Association for Automobile Sports Rizvi Farook was an eye witness to the incident. At leaset two riders were involve in this incident.


Blind cricketers elect officials

CRICKET: Alex Jayawardena, JP was elected Hony. President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Association of the Visually Handicapped held on March 29.

Priyantha and Chandana Thushara The new committee will concentrate on getting up the Sri Lanka Blind Team for the 4th World Cup Cricket Tournament for the Blind that will be held in November 2010 in England or South Africa.


Peradeniya and Moratuwa men’s and women’s champs

Peradeniya University won the men’s championships and Moratuwa University won the women’s championships at the Inter-University day and night hockey tournament held at the Peradeniya University grounds. The tournament was conducted by the Department of Physical Education, University of Peradeniya.
