The United National Party launched a program to collect dry rations,
milk foods, ready made garments and medicine to be distributed to over
180,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North.
UNP, General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake told the Sunday Observer
that some UNP members visited the camps few weeks ago to look into the
welfare of IDPs and decided to start this humanitarian program on the
directive of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
In addition to donations made by district UNP organisers to this
worthy cause, Attanayake also appealed individuals to make their
contributions to the party Head Quarters.
“We have made arrangements to send these stocks to the welfare camps,
set up in Vavuniya and Jaffna districts from next week,” he said.
When asked about the UNPs stand on the on going operations in the No
Fire Zone (NFZ), Attanayake said his party always extended its fullest
cooperation to eradicate terrorism and recalled the era when Sri Lankan
armed forces under the UNP regime confined the LTTE to Vadamarachchi.
He also reiterated that the Government must seek a political solution
and obtain the support of the international community to solve the
problem.
