A large consignment of dry rations, biscuits, milk foods, readymade
garments, clothing materials and medicine for over 180,000 Internally
Displaced Persons (IDPs) were dispatched to Vavuniya District and
suburban welfare camps.
The Competent Authority, BMICH Distribution Centre, Bandula Ekanayake
told the `Sunday Observer' that twenty containers and lorryloads of food
items, garments and medicine have been sent to Vavuniya welfare camps.
He said that the distribution centre at BMICH receives a substantial
stocks of food items, dry rations, medicine and garments from various
organisations and from individuals.
"As a result we took a decision to send at least three to four
lorryloads of food items a day for IDPs from next week," he said.
Ekanayake also said that several organisations have also pledged
their support to send building materials for IDPs, but priority is given
to send food items, garments and medicine.
He said several organisations and individuals have volunteered to
build around 100 housing units for IDPs and this project will commence
after selecting a suitable location in the district.
