Back from Oman after a rewarding career stint there playing with his
group Oasis, Ranjith Liyanage is kept busy performing for many events
with his new trio the Melody Makers. A versatile drummer and a vocalist
Ranjith tells us that after returning from Oman, he moved into
production set up a recording studio and has helped many a young
musician who was wanting to launch their music career.
“The other members of my band are Walter Wethage, he plays
keyboardist and vocalist and then there’s Perakum the guitarist who is a
singer as well. It’s useful when all the members are good vocalists. Our
repertoire is Western and Sinhala.
The Western segment covers evergreens, rock’n roll and r&b, while our
Sinhala repertoire includes songs by Clarence and Milton,” says Ranjith
whose Melody Makers are a “freelance” group playing for many weddings
and private parties.
“We also do event management and back musicians at concerts and
recordings. Last December we were featured at Mr. Sri Lanka 2008 and
that was interesting. We intend releasing a CD with our own compositions
and since the other two members are talented we are looking at variety,”
continues Ranjith.
The year 1970 was significant for Ranjith who launched Golden Arrows
the band. But as always the attraction to play abroad is something most
musicians look forward to and his trip to Oman with the band Oasis gave
him the opportunity to learn the finer points of professional
performance. Now back at home the experience abroad has held him in good
stead. |
