Movies that appeal to all
Nilma Dole
No doubt, it’s India’s poverty that really sells and even though the
flick `Slumdog Millionaire’ won Oscars for that, the storyline is rather
effective portrayed besides the poverty. The fact that child star Rubina
Ali was allegedly going to be sold by her father for more than
US$300,000 after the success of Slumdog, proves how deadly the child
labour and trafficking issues are in India.
Also, the population problem and traditional aspects of Indian
culture need to addressed make this movie a really thought-provoking one
as people have something to talk about at the end of the day.
Hence, a change has been made and the movie has given birth to the
`Jai Ho’ trust a.k.a the Slumdog Millionaire trust. The movie also
reveals how millions of poor people live in India and realising one’s
dreams could be the ultimate thing in life, especially when a win as big
as “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” competition could prove everything.
Often, movies have not done justice to the books as Vikras Swarap’s Q
& A garnered the Booker Prize Award but then Danny Boyle saw the best
way to make the film was to really get down to the core of Indian
society but it also draws a bleak picture about life there. Honestly, at
one time, you’d feel like throwing up as the movie depicts the raw and
crude side of Indian behaviour.
The story starts when Jamal Malik, the winner of the”Who Wants To Be
A Millionaire?” game is arrested by police who think he cheated on the
show especially when he’s now worth Rs. 20 million. He is thrashed,
beaten and electrocuted and on the verge of dying when he tells the
Chief Inspector that he knew the answers.
Slowly, he reveals his life story from the time he was young, the
decisions he made, the reasons for his behaviour and the fact that he
had to somehow come out of his poverty life and his love which gave him
the answers to most of the questions on the show.
From losing his mother in a Muslim-Hindu riot to being taken as an
orphan to beg for money to nearly losing his sight, he tells that the
only reason he came on the Millionaire game show was because his true
love was watching.
Thankfully, the story has a happy ending and they all live happily
ever after but it also makes you thank your lucky stars that you weren’t
born in a Mumbai slum and we should never take our lives for granted.
