Six new records at Lanka Lions meet

ATHLETICS: National Athlete Charith Kapukotuwa of Royal College achieved a grand double winning the boys under-20 discus throw and shot putt setting two new meet records at the Lanka Lions Spots Club 11th Senior and 10th Junior Athletic Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Charith who fared prominently at the recently concluded Thai Open Championships won the Discus Throw with a record distance of 44.61 metres. He accounted for second record in the Shot Putt throwing the iron ball to 15.03 metres. Altogether six new meet records were established. The other record breakers were Sanjuna Sumanaweera (Unattached) in the boys under-16 shot putt 15.54 metres H. M. Nimesha Madushani (Galenbindunuwewa Central College) girls under-16 high jump going over the bar at 1.60 metres. A Sujani Lakshika (Welasiya School Madurankuliya) girls under-16 javeline throw with a good throw of 34.34 metres and D. Sharanga Jarshana (Gurukula Vidyalaya Kelaniya) boys under-16, 800 metres with a time of 2.03.1 secs.

The meet will be continued today starting at 8 a.m. with 59 events to be worked off in five age categories for boys and girls together with men and women open. Fourteen challenge trophies are on offer for the individual championships.
