Bad weather due to monsoon
by Rohana JAYALAL
The rainy weather experienced in several areas in the country during
the last few days is due to the prevailing southwest monsoon conditions
and the current bad weather conditions with strong winds will continue
for a few more days, according to Meteorologist, Ananda Perera.
In the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Northwestern
provinces, there will be thundershowers with strong winds likely to lash
the western slopes of the central hills and also Western and Southern
coastal areas. It might spread in to other parts of the country as well.
According to Perera "The winds are quite strong during the southwest
monsoon period and the combination of thunder, rains and winds may
generate tornado conditions".
The speed of winds is expected to be between 60 and 65 Km/Ph or over
in the Northeastern, Western and Southern seas, according to the
meteorologist.
Meanwhile, Director General of the Disaster Management Centre Major
General Gamini Hettiarachchi told the
Sunday Observer there is no truth that there would be tsunami
conditions on July 22 and as such it is no cause for panic.
There are four tsunami warning signals installed in the Indian ocean
to warn the public of any tsunami threat.
