by S. M. Jiffrey ABDEEN - Kandy South
The work on the new Katugastota bridge over the Mahaweli Ganga is
expected to be completed by July 24 and will be opened for traffic
shortly.
This concrete bridge will replace the century old iron bridge which
is parallel to the new bridge and is at the beginning of the A-9 highway
which leads upto Jaffna. This road also leads to Kurunegala and into the
Wayamba Province and on to the right to Matale through two routes via
Wattegama and Akurana and ends up in Batticaloa and Trincomalee passing
through the important towns of Dambulla and Polonnaruwa and through the
cultural sites of Aluwihare and Sigiriya.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Central Range) Pujith Jayasundera
said that the opening of the bridge should help the free flow of
traffic. |
