One of the nation's most trusted business conglomerates Richard
Peiris & Company (Arpico), has been helping to build Sri Lankan lives
and communities for over 75 years has volunteered to assist the IDP's
when the government requested.
Chairman Dr. Sena Yaddehige promptly responded by identifying the
most pressing needs of the thousands of displaced persons and providing
customer made solutions. 'A large number of essential items were
donated, such as specially-made 500-litre dustbins, Arpico mattresses,
plastic chairs, plastic buckets, water tanks, household durables,
clothing, and many more, worth over Rs. 5 million.
A convoy consisting of 10 trucks set out to Vavuniya with these
supplies, making stops at Arpico's Kurunegala, Dambulla, and
Anuradhapura showrooms, where they were welcomed by employees as well as
the public in religious ceremonies to bless their journey.
Upon reaching Menik Farm in Vavuniya, where the majority of IDPs are
housed, the Arpico team was received by the Competent Authority, Major
General G.A. Chandrasiri and his staff who briefed the Arpico team on
the extensive welfare arrangements made by the government in looking
after more than 250,000 displaced persons. While taking the team on a
tour of the camps, the Major General emphasized the importance of
continuing to extend assistance until the IDPs are resettled.
Commenting on Arpico's role as a responsible corporate citizen,
Managing Director of Richard Peiris Plastics, Sunil Liyanage noted that
`whenever our country needed us, we've risen to the occasion.'
