500 youth in Jaffna to join police force
Five-hundred youth from the Jaffna peninsula will be recruited
immedialety for the Police Department on the directive of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Jaffna,
Roshan Fernando.
The Jaffna youth will be recruited for the ranks of Sub Inspectors
and Constables. The interviews for selection will be held in the first
week of October.
Recruitment to the police force is taking place from the North for
the first time in three decades.
There is enthusiasm among the Jaffna youth to join the police force
and hundreds of youth including degree holders are expected to pile up
for the interview, the sources said.
Meanwhile, the 143rd anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police was
celebrated in Jaffna on Friday. SSP Jaffna, Roshan Fernando inspected
the guard of honour of the policemen.
The first police station in Jaffna was set up in 1896, with one
officer and five constables.
At present there are sixteen police stations in the Jaffna peninsula.
With the new recuritment in Jaffna the Government has initiated
measures to deal with the issues in Tamil at police stations in the
North, SSP Fernando said.
