CDC helps to arrest unlawful activities

Several persons involved in criminal activity such as drug
trafficking and terrorist activity were taken into custody by the police
with the support extended by Members of the Civil Defence Committee
(CDC) revealed its Director, Senior Superintendent of Police T.M.
Karunaratne at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday.
Senior DIG Western Province Nimal Mediweke, DIG Colombo H.M.D. Herath,
DIG Traffic Headquarters Lucky Peiris, DIG Police Narcotics Bureau,
Sisira Mendis, and senior officers participated at the media briefing.
SSP Karunaratne said the Civil Defence Committee members had tipped
off the police regarding the LTTE suicide kits and the robbery staged in
the Pettah area a few moths ago. They also tipped off the police about a
Rs. 9 million robbery staged at Kotadeniyawa. The Civil Defence
Committee had helped police to maintain the law and order situation in
the country and provided security cover to most schools in the Colombo
district.
Meanwhile, DIG, Traffic Headquarters, Lucky Peiris said the public
can now inform police by ringing 2394959 during traffic congestion.
"We would then send a police team to the spot to investigate the
congestion. The scheme would be extended to the provinces later," he
said.
He pleaded with motorists not to park their vehicles on pavements and
drive under the influence of liquor.
DIG, Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), Sisira Mendis said that they are
working in closer collaboration with international anti-drug agencies
to crack down on heroin smuggling operations. The PNB with foreign drug
agencies has launched an investigation into the incident where a
Pakistani national had attempted to smuggle three kilograms of heroin.
