Farming community honoured at Mahaweli Week

The Mahaweli Week concluded in Tangalle last week with tributes paid
to around 140,000 Mahaweli farming families.Minister for Ports and Civil
Aviation and Irrigation and Water Management Chamal Rajapaksa praised
the contributions made by the farmers of the Southern Province in
stabilising the national economy.
Minister of Export Development and International Trade and Acting
Minister of Posts and Telecommunication G. L. Peiris, addressing the
Mahaweli Week rally in Tangalle, said that the agricultural sector had
contributed significantly to Sri Lanka's ability to mitigate the
consequences of the global economic meltdown.
Minister of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services, who was
also the host of the Mahaweli Week celebrations elaborated on the
programme carried out by the Mahaweli Authority to enhance the
productivity of the agro sector and the living conditions of the farming
families throughout the country.
