Fish prices down at St. John's

Fish prices are likely to come down in the coming days with prices already on the decrease at wholesale markets with over-production in the north, said Fisheries Ministry sources.

According to the sources, vendors and door-to-door sellers were jacking up prices despite fish prices coming down at the St.John's fish market, Colombo.

The surplus northern catch is being gradually transported to Colombo to meet the demand in the south.

A kilo of seer fish was sold at the wholesale price of Rs. 300 last week, but vendors sold 500g of fish at rates between Rs. 360 and Rs. 400.

The Fisheries Ministry will set up `Jaffna fish' sales outlets when the surplus northern catch could be transported to Colombo without a break.
