Gammanpila on Ven. Dambara Amila Thera:
Decision made by judiciary, not govt.
by P. Krishnaswamy
Jathika Hela Urumaya Legal Advisor and Western PC Minister Udaya
Gammanpila, commenting on the arrest and detention in remand of
Ven.Dambara Amila Thera, President of the pro-JVP Patriotic National
Centre, said it was not the Government, but the Judiciary that remanded
the Ven. Thera. "Street protests are not the right course of action
against a judicial decision", he also said.
There is a case against the Ven.Thera and on presentation of evidence
by the CID, the Magistrate who presided at the Bandaragama Circuit Court
remanded him for the second time.
Everybody is subject to the laws of the country and the judiciary
should take its own course. If they are not happy with the decision,
they should have appealed to a higher Court instead of holding protests,
Gammanpila said.
"The judiciary has no choice just because he is a political leader
and Buddhist monk, but has to apply the laws upon him", Gammanpila
stated.
