He said around 80 percent of trade documentation is handled manually
which needs to be replaced with a more effective system. Electronic
documentation will be introduced soon to the Customs.
"International trade has to be on one platform to derive the maximum
benefit of technology. The Customs is geared to provide a better service
in a challenging environment", he said.
The new gateway facility set up with an investment of Rs. 43 million
will reduce transit time by half a day. The Gateway facility in Sri
Lanka has the latest technology and cargo handling equipment.
The 15,000 sq.ft facility provides faster clearance and seamless
handling of in-bound and out-bound consignments. The facility is scaled
to accommodate growth over the next five years.
DHL Express Country Manager, Manish Patel said Sri Lanka's air cargo
transportation has a strong growth potential in a more vibrant business
environment.
"Growth in international trade makes a vital contribution to the
economy. DHL's new Gateway facility at the BIA will enhance efficiency
and export revenue to the country", Patel said.
"The facility set up within the BIA enables the company to provide
customs enhanced solutions.
The investment strengthens private public partnership which is
essential to promote international trade", he said.
The gateway is equipped with CCTV, Clearance In Air (CIA) imaging,
material handling equipment, radio frequency scanners, customised
racking systems, electronic data interface and inhouse customs and
security screening.
He said DHL recorded a double digit growth in trade volumes this year
after a major setback last year due to the global economic crisis.
Senior Vice President and Area Director DHL Express South Asia, Malcolm
Monteiro said the Gateway Service Centre reiterates DHL's commitment to
invest in world class facilities in all markets it operates.
DHL operates in over 220 countries and has over 10 service centres in
Sri Lanka. The company commenced operations in Sri Lanka in 1980 with an
agreement with John Keells Holdings.
