Fonseka, no threat to UNP - Dr. Kodituwakku
by L. S. Ananda WEDAARACHCHI
The UNP vote base will not be affected by DNA candidate Sarath
Fonseka, said Colombo District UNP Candidate, Ex-minister Dr. Karunasena
Kodituwakku.
He said that the UNP, the oldest political party in the country has a
traditional vote base of an average 35 percent in general and 40 percent
in the Colombo district.
Sarath Fonseka’s DNA campaign is led by the JVP. The JVP is basically
a minor political party of adult students and the underpriviledged. The
decisive factor of an election is the floating vote. The floating votes
at the presidential election which went to Sarath Fonseka may not go to
the DNA at the forthcoming general election but to the UNP led by Ranil
Wickremesinghe. This is a parliamentary election where political parties
play a major role, he said.
Dr. Kodituwakku, an ex-university Vice Chancellor, Ambassador and
Governor said that the voters and candidates must realise the importance
of the Parliament, the legislature of the country and the assembly which
manages the country’s budget.
The members of the governing party as well as the Opposition have to
play a vital role for the country’s development.
The people had a high regard for Dr. S. A. Wickramasingha, Sarath
Muththetuwegama, Robert Gunawardena as well as Dr. N. M. Perera because
of the roles they played in Parliament as MPs. Parliament needs MPs of
such calibre who can contribute their mite in the legislature
effectively, he said. |
