Police to nab litter bugs

The public who used to litter roads and public places by dumping garbage will face legal action as the Municipal authorities together with the Police will streamline garbage dumping.

Special Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council, Omar Kamil told the Sunday Observer that 12 Police officers have already been attached to each of the six divisions in the Colombo Municipal Engineers Department to work towards this end.

The Police officers will help the Municipal Engineer's offices to nab the people who litter the roads and dump garbage in public places.He said the Police team, under the supervision of DIG Anura Senanayake is working with the Colombo Municipal Council to streamline the garbage dumping.

Once the Police nab the offenders they will be given a warning."If the public continue to ignore the warnings steps will be taken to prosecute them, Kamil said.

He said Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte and Kandy Municipal Council are seeking Police assistance to nab the offenders.With Police assistance we are going to streamline the garbage collection process in a bid to keep the city clean", he said.
