GPS for Lankan motorists
by Shirajiv SIRIMANE
'Sala ProSat' Sri Lanka's first ever GPS Road Navigation System was
launched last Thursday by Sala Geo Information Systems Pvt Ltd (Sala
GIS), a subsidiary of Sala Enterprises. The GPS Navigation System helps
locate and navigate any address in Sri Lanka and is commonly used in
developed countries. It also provides turn by turn guidance for
travelling to any place along the shortest route. The user will thus
save fuel and time and save national resources as well.
This provides accurate location and time information for people in
all weather, during day and night. A GPS receiver calculates its
position by precisely timing the signals sent by the GPS satellites high
above the Earth.
Managing Director of Sala GIS, Chinthaka Wijewickrama said, "Our aim
is to take advantage of Sri Lanka's post-war economic boom including the
development in the tourism sector. We are confident that the
introduction of the System will not only be of benefit to a very large
cross section of users, and a national asset that enhances the country's
image in the region"
It has over 100,000 important landmarks and points of interest such
as Fuel stations, ATMs, Banks, Hospitals, Hotels, Parks and Police
stations. "It tells you your exact location and easily helps find places
you want to go without anyone's assistance."
Sala ProSat's maps are prepared according to Sri Lanka's traffic law
and considering the status of roads in the country. In case of any
unexpected traffic congestion or obstacles on the way, the GPS System
will instantly find and offer the best alternative route and thus
improve traffic discipline at all times.
