Basketball Nationals:
School cagers record two wins

Sri Lanka Schools and the Mercantile Services scored comfortable wins
on the opening day of the Women's Basketball Nationals organised by the
Kandy District Basketball Association played at St. Anthony's Girls
College courts at Katugastota yesterday.
In the opening match Sri Lanka Schools trounced Jaffna District by 69
points to 18 after leading 36 for 5 at lemons.
The speed and power play of Sri Lanka Schools lasses were too much
for Jaffna Ladies who succumbed under pressure.
Leading scorers for Sri Lanka Schools were Holy Family Convent's
Keyasha Siriwardana (18), Dharmasoka's, Ambalangoda, Kanchana
Wijesiriwardena (16). For Jaffna N. Shoba scored 10.
Christopher Ranasinghe and R. Rilwan refereed.
In the second match Mercantile Services outplayed Kandy District to
the tune of 77 points to 18. At half time Mercantile girls led 33-5.
Kandy team comprising most of school girls could not cope with the
experience of the Mercantile team and they conceded a heavy defeat.
The main scorers for Mercantile women's team were Umanga de Soysa
(18), Dilani Fernando (12) an D. Dananjali (10). For Kandy Mahamaya's
Achini Jayasundera scored 9 points.
R. Rilwan and Christopher Ranasingha refereed.
In the third match of the day Sri Lanka Schools scored their second
win Swamping Kurunegala District by the massive margin of 63-14. At half
Sri Lanka Schools were in command leading 37-4. Main scorers for Sri
Lanka Schools were Nugegoda St. Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya's Sanduni
Perra (10), Keyasha Siriwardena (16), Wellawatta St. Lawrence's College,
Natasha Perera (14) and St. Bridget's Convent's Swiri Fernando (10). For
Kurunegala Anjali Peramunagama scored 12 points.

The matches will be continued from 6.45 a.m. onwards at the same
venue today.
Jaffna District continued their run of success in the Men's
Basketball national when they scored a thrilling 78-74 win over Gall
District at Kingswood College court, Kandy yesterday. At half time Galle
Districts led 41-24. In the second match Badulla District Squeezed
through to a 45 points to 38 win over Matara District. At half time the
scores stood deadlocked at 24 all.
At Trinity College courts Kurunegala District beat Kegalle District
70 points to 60 after leading 37-20 at half time. In another match Kandy
District beat Ratnapura District 76 points to 23. At lemons Kandy led
44-11. |
