Lights for 720 households in Matara and Galle

Plans are afoot to provide electricity connections to 720 households
in the Matara and Galle districts under the SIDA aid, Iran loan
assistance and Widulamu Lanka Southern Province project.
The 516 rural electricity projects will be implemented in the Galle
district covering Elpitiya, Nagoda, Karandeniya, Yakkalamulla, Neluwa,
Baddegama and Thawalagama divisional secretariat divisions. The
estimated cost of the projects is Rs. 85.7 million.
Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has directed the
authorities to launch 203 rural electricity projects in the Matara
district covering Kotapola, Pitabaddara, Pasgoda, Dikwella and Akuressa
divisional secretariat divisions. The estimated cost of the project is
Rs. 134.1 million.
Funds for these projects will be provided by SIDA, Government of Iran
and the Widulamu Lanka Southern Province project, Power and Energy
Ministry sources said.
The Government has met nearly 88 percent of the country's electricity
requirements and the remaining 12 percent will be completed soon.
Ministry sources said that the electricity needs of the rural
population would be fulfilled by 2012.
The rural electricity project Lighting Sri Lanka Ratnapura project,
Lighting Sri Lanka Kegalle project, Lighting Sri Lanka Central Province
project, Lighting Sri Lanka North Central Province project and Lighting
Sri Lanka North Central Province project will be launched soon.
