Ampara farmers get ready for Yala

Farmers in the Ampara district are readying for the Yala Season paddy cultivation. Agricultural Meetings are being held in Agrarian Centres throughout the District to encourage farmers.

Guidelines are being given to farmers in the district at these meetings, said Deputy Agricultural Director A.L.M. Harees.

Initially meetings will be held in Pottuvil, Thirukkovil, Akkaraipatu, Addalachchenai, Alayadivembu, Ninthavur, Irakkamam, Karaithivu, Sammanthurai and the Navithanveli Divisional Secretariat Divisions, Harees said.

Farmers are being educated on ways and means of raising finance to carry out agricultural activities during the Yala Season, the time to complete the sowing activities and the water supply methods, the Deputy Director said.

Paddy cultivation has dropped considerably due to the damage caused to irrigation tanks and canels during the recent floods, Harees said. MN
