Protection for deep sea fishermen
by Mohammed NAALIR
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Rajitha Senaratne has
assumed Justice Minister and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress National Leader
Rauff Hakeem that action would be taken to protect fishermen in the deep
seas off Ampara.
This follows a meeting between the two Ministers at Fisheries and
Aquatic Resources Ministry recently.
Decisions were taken at the meeting regarding problems in the Mutur
fisheries harbour, housing scheme for tsunami affected fishermen in
Sainthamaruthu and the boat repairing workshop.
Minister Hakeem apprised Minister Senaratne that due to heavy
currents the fishing boats were being drawn towards the deep seas and
the fishermen went missing.
Minister Senaratne has assured Minister Hakeem that a communication
tower will be set up at the Oluvil fisheries harbour area in a few weeks
to communicate with over 2,000 fishing boats in the area and the large
number of vessels passing by daily.
Minister Senaratne has directed the authorities to prepare a
feasibility report following a request by Minister Rauff Hakeem to
develop the area close to the Mutur Jetty to facilitate the fishermen
from Mutur.
