May Day celebrations in Colombo:

Smooth flow of traffic

The Police have made elaborate arrangements for all May Day rallies in Colombo and the provinces to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. The Police urged motorists to comply with the routing arrangements to minimise any delays and congestion.

DIG Traffic and Road Safety Asoka Wijetilleke said vehicles travelling along the Kandy Road will travel along the Baseline road and arrangements have been made to park vehicles transporting people for May Day events at Deans Road and Suduwella Road.

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa paid a visit to the Colombo Municipal Council Ground to inspect arrangements for the United People Freedom Alliance’s May Day rally. Also in the picture are Ministers Maithreepala Siresena and Dallas Alahapperuma

Vehicles proceeding from Galle Road will be parked on the left side of Green Path. Vehicles proceeding along the High Level Road will be diverted to Borella and Maradana and parking will be at Reid Avenue.

Vehicles proceeding from Kaduwela will be diverted to Orugodawatte and Borella and parking will be at Reid Avenue. Vehicles proceeding from Negombo will be diverted to Baseline Road and parking will be at Green Path.Vehicles proceeding from Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte will be diverted to Borella and parking will be provided at Maitland Place. Vehicles proceeding from Kesbewa-Piliyandala, Horana, arriving at Kohuwela will be diverted to Narahenpita and parking will be at Nidahas Mawatha.

There will be 11 rallies in Colombo today. The UPFA rally will start from Campbell Place and proceed along Borella junction, WardPlace, Eye Hospital junction to the Town Hall where the meeting will be held.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) rally will start from S.de S. Jayasinghe Park and proceed along Kalubovila Road, Sri Saranankara Road, Pamankade junction, Kirulapone High Level Road to Havelock Town where their meeting will take place. The Nava Sama Samaja Party rally will commence from Fort Railway station and will proceed along Olcott Mawatha, Gunasinghapura to Saunders Place. The Samajawadi Pakshaya will hold its meeting at Jayantha Weerasekera Community Centre.

The Samajawadi Samanathma Party will hold their meeting at New Town Hall.

The Eksath Samajawadi Party rally will proceed along Old Awissawella Road, Orugodawatte junction, Stace Road for their meeting at Kosgashandiya.

Trade Union Samithi Maha Sammelanaya will commence opposite the Fort Railway station and proceed along Lake House junction, Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, Slave Island, Union Place for the meeting at Hyde Park.

The Lanka Welanda Karmika Trade Union rally will commence at Kollupitiya and will proceed along Galle Road, Modera roundabout, Macan Markar Mawatha, Malay Street, Union Place and the meeting will be held at Hyde Park.

The July Strikers' Association will commence their rally opposite the Public Library and will proceed along Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Liberty Junction, Dharmapala Mawatha and Red Cross Junction. The meeting will be held at the Public Library.
