G. K. Depositors to get six % interest

The Golden Key Depositors Association has decided to hold a meeting on June 5, at S. De. S Jayasinghe hall 10 a.m to spell out details about the new repayment plan.President of the Association, Dushanthi Hapugodasaid that former CEO, Kavan Perera has agreed to pay six percent interest to all depositors in addition to their capital. “We are holding this meeting to explain to the 7054 depositors how and when this payment would be made .” she said.

The Ceylinco scam totals upto almost Rs. 20 billion and a sum of Rs. 700 million has been paid so far with small time depositors being settled.Six people have committed suicide over this scandal.


Blood donor registration closes on May 31

The Blood Bank has called upon the public who are over 30 years of age and who wish to be registered as blood donors, to contact the National Blood Bank at Narahenpita (Tel. 011-2369931 - 4) or the nearest Blood Bank.Names, addresses, NIC Nos and photocopies of donor certificates should be furnished.

Fowzie opens Masjid in Tokyo

Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie opened a Masjid (Mosque) built by Sri Lanka Muslims living in Japan Yesterday.

The Mosque known as As-Salaam Masjid has been a long felt need and it has been now completed by As-Salaam Foundation headed by Mohamed Nazeer, a Sri Lankan Gem Merchant.

The Masjid apart from serving the Muslims for 5 times prayers, will serve as centre for Islamic Studies and Dawah activities.


Asoka Wijetilleka appointed Senior DIG

Deputy Inspector General of Police Asoka Wijetilleka has been promoted to the rank of Senior DIG.

Wijetilleka had held several key positions in the Police Department including in the Western Province North, Criminal Investigations Department (CID), North Central Range, Police Headquarters and DIG Traffic Administration, Road Safety and Traffic Operations.

He will assume duties with immediate effect as the Senior DIG Eastern Province covering Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee.

Young lad appeals for kidney

Sixteen-year-old W. Thusitha Shehara of 96/3 Sagarapura, Beruwala has been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure and urgent Kidney transplantation has been advised by Dr. A.H. Hewageegana, Consultant Nephrologist of the National Institute for Nephrology on Colombo 10.

Thusitha whose blood group is O+ve is in need of a donor with either O+ve or O-ve.

Cardiac patient appeals for help

D L Padma Nimal, (53) of No 4/D-2 Germanwatta, Hettikade, Pepiliyawala is suffering from a severe heart ailment. Dr. Y K M Lahie, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at The Lanka Hospitals has recommended immediate by-pass surgery to save his life.

The cost of the surgery is around Rs. 540,000 and as he is not in a position to afford same he appeals to the generous public for help. Donations can be remitted to A/c No 093200114616509, People's Bank, Pugoda branch. Tel: 0775239988.
 


Patient needs A+ kidney

Chandika Weerasinghe (43) of Fr. Rex Dias Road, Wennappuwa is suffering from acute renal failure.

Dr. C.A. Herath, Nephrologist, Colombo Central Hospital has recommended kidney transplantation.

Intl. award for Dr. Hirimburegama

Dr. Kumara Hirimburegama, Director of the Institute of Human Resource Advancement of the University of Colombo received the prestigious Aryabhata International Award 2010 recently in Bangalore, India in recognition of his contribution to the field of education. Dr. Hirimburegama, a scientist in biotechnology with research experience in Sri Lanka with the International Atomic Energy Authority and in Belgium, Israel and USA.
