Two hundred and seventy bottles of moonshine was seized by the Chunnakam police on Wednesday afternoon after they were tipped off of a lorry which was transporting it into the area. The OIC of the Chunnakam Police Chinthaka Bandara confirmed that the bottles were seized.

We arrested the driver and helper immediately and produced them before the Mallagam Magistrate on Thursday. A fine of Rs. 85,000 was imposed on each for being in possession and transporting the illicit liquor at the time of arrest, he said. We suspect it was being transported for distribution to restaurants and bars in Chunnakam and Jaffna but we have no confirmation. An investigation has been launched, he said.

Bandara also denied several media reports which claimed a rise in theft and burglaries in the Chunnakam area and said that he was not aware of any incidents. My team and I will act fast if any such incident is reported, he said.
