Murali 16 for 220 routs England by 10 wickets at London Oval

CRICKET: Retired off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was the main architect of the first-ever Sri Lankan Test win against the Englishmen in England in August 1998. His match bag of 16 for 220 still stands as the best bowling effort in a Test at the London Oval. The Test was played on August 27 to 31 in 1998 and Sri Lankan won by 10 wickets.

Muttiah Muralitharan’s match bag of 16 for 220 paved the way for Sri Lanka to beat England for the first time in a Test match in England.

Aravinda de Silva blasted the English attack with a fine 152.

Sanath Jayasuriya struck a whirlwind 213.

Graeme Hick (107) batted well for England.

Muralitharan's match bag of 16 wickets, (seven in the first Innings and nine in the second Innings) paved the way for the Sri Lankan win. Muralitharan also won for himself the Man of the Match award.

England, who were sent into bat first after Sri Lanka won the toss, did not encounter much problems while facing Muralitharan in the first Innings. Graeme Hick (107) and left-hander John Crawley (156 n.o) batted exquisitely to take the England score to 445 after losing three early wickets for 81.

Sri Lanka's response in their first Innings revolved around two astonishing Innings, a double hundred by opener Sanath Jayasuriya (213) and Aravinda de Silva (152) who were involved in a third-wicket stand of 243. Skipper Ranatunga chipped in with a useful 51 and debutante Suresh Perera struck 43 to give the side a useful 146-run lead as the Lankans were all out for 591 in reply to England's first innings total of 445.

Muralitharan's spell in the second Innings coupled with some fine fielding proved to be a disaster for England with only Mark Ramprakash (42) top scoring for England as they were dismissed for 181 in 129.2 overs. Muralitharan's 54.2 overs got him 9 wickets for 65 runs with 27 maidens.
