The Test that stunned the cricket world...:
England took 20 Indian wickets in one day 1952
By A.C. De Silva
CRICKET: The England-India Test series in the early days - that's in
1952 produced some startling results, especially the third Test at Old
Trafford, Manchester where England scored a rousing win by an innings
and 207 runs.
The result that stunned the cricket world was the manner in which the
Indian batsmen crumbled in both innings in one day. They were shot out
for 58 runs in the first innings in 21 overs and following on, were out
for 82 in their second innings.
England batted first and made 347 in the first innings with a fine
century by Len Hutton who made 104. There were two other good
contributions by Peter May (69) and wicket-keeper Godfrey Evans (71). It
appeared to be a match winning total.
When the Indians went into bat, they found the bowling of England
paceman Fred Trueman difficult to cope with and were shot out for 58.
Trueman had the marvellous figures of 8 overs 2 maidens 31 runs and 8
wickets - a truly outstanding bowling feat.
The follow-on was inevitable and the Indians didn't do anything to
give the England team a fight back and were out for 82 in their second
innings. So, twenty Indian wickets fell in one day.
After Trueman did the damage for the Indians in the first innings, it
was Bedser (5 for 27) and Tony Lock (4 for 36) who tore into the Indian
batting in the second innings and had the Indians out for 82 in their
second innings.
So, it was a wonderful show by the England team in the series.
The First Test at Headingley was won by England by 7 wickets (India
293 and 165; England 334 and 128/3).
The 2nd Test at Lord's, London, England won by 8 wickets. (India 235
and 378), England 537 and 79/2 wickets, while the Fourth Test at London
was drawn (England 326 for 6 wkts dec) and India 98.
