Moratuwa Vidyalaya beat Piliyandala Central by 6 wkts in 1956

CRICKET: Cricket is a very popular in and around Moratuwa and though the facilities are limited, the schools around the area indulge in this game.

Most of the games have been played on matting wickets. An interesting clash took place between Moratu Vidyalaya and Piliyandala Central on the matting wicket of Moratu Vidyalaya on 17th and 18th March 1956 with play starting at 12 noon on each day.

On paper, Piliyandala Central fielded quite a formidable team and were unbeaten throughout the season and Moratu Vidyalaya had lost some games during the season.

However, it was Moratu Vidyalaya that called the tune in the match. Piliyandala Central batting first, were shot out for 84 in their first innings with Moratu Vidyalaya bowler H. Fernando taking 4 for 15.

Moratu Vidyalaya made 132 in their turn and for Piliyandala Central T. Thilakaratne had the best bowling figures of 5 for 46. Piliyandala Central made 107 runs in their second innings with P. Henry top-scoring with 31.

However, Moratu Vidyalaya went on to win the match anf they made 60 for 4 wickets thereby winning the match by six wickets.
