Fort Square Ground, Matara to be modernised by Army

Maintenance of Ground: The Fort Square Ground within the historic Matara Fort is to get a ‘new look’ with the ground being handed over to the Gemunu Watch of the Sri Lanka Army.

The Fort Square Ground to be modernised by Gemunu Watch of the Sri Lanka Army for the sake of sportsmen in Matara. The picture on top shows the open ground where the tennis court will be modernised and the physical training and weightlifting exercises can be brought upto date.

The ground has been neglected all these years, but now Gemunu Watch has been entrusted with the task of re-laying the two tennis courts and getting the ground to good condition so that sportsmen will be able to make use of it.

This should be happy news for tennis fans in and around Matara that they can make use of the tennis courts once again.

Captain Bharatha Kodituwakku being of the capable man that he is will no doubt do a good job for the sake of the sports loving public of Matara.

The Mahinda Wijesekera pavilion that is situated within the ground houses a gymnasium and this was the only kept in order and used by sportsmen.

The ground is situated opposite the Army camp and it ground too is bound to improve with the Army in-charge.

Besides the tennis courts, many people are suggesting that a swimming pool too be made available to the young boys and girls who could use the facilities.

Matara does not have a swimming pool, except for the 25-metre pool that is at Rahula College.

An 8-lane swimming pool is what most people yearn for so that the young boys and girls will be able to use and excel in the sport.

There is space at the Fort Square Ground for a pool and there is bound to be some sponsors to take the lead if building a swimming pool for the young boys and girls of Matara.
