Inherent risks in parking vehicles

Vehicle owners should be vigilant when parking vehicles in vehicle parks and unauthorised places for long durations.

According to a senior officer of the Bambalapitiya police station, shady characters hover around large car parks during the day and steal vehicle parts posing as the owners of these vehicles.

When this was brought to the notice of the City Traffic Police, SP Chula de Silva said although no complaints have been lodged so far in this regard, it is the sole responsibility of security officers or park attendants at vehicle parks to protect vehicles which are in their custody until the owners return.

These organised gangs usually steal wheel cups, side mirrors, lights and badges of vehicles. A vehicle park attendant who recounted a similar incident in Kollupitiya recently said that a neatly clad person had opened a vehicle with the assistance of a key-cutter from Slave Island.
