Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratna,
Secretary,
Ministry of Higher
Education
Q: Mr. Secretary, why this student unrest?
A: Unlike in the past, today all academic sessions commence on
the same day. Senior students make it a habit to show their ‘colours’ to
the freshers. This happens very often.
Q: But students too have problems!
A: Of course, if there are problems we shall solve them one by
one.

Transport Board
Q: When will you reach your final target of 7,000 buses?
A: We will achieve the target of 7,000 buses somewhere in
October next year.
Our aim is to provide a well regulated bus service to the commuters.
Only the SLTB provides late evenings and night services.
The SLTB has programmed to increase its fleet to 6,000 buses by
January. Buses which were idling in depots due to mechanical defects are
undergoing repairs.
Scant regard for debate

Former Chairman, United National Party
Q: What happened to the budget debate on the votes of the
Petroleum Industries Ministry at the Committee Stage. The UNP MPs were
absent and Parliament had to be adjourned?
A: Today the Opposition is very weak. Budget debates are very
important for the Opposition. It gives the opportunity to expose
government’s failures, setbacks etc. Apart from the Opposition Leader,
the Chief Opposition Whip too had failed to perform his duties.
