New wax to preserve fruits, vegetables

The latest variety
|
Industrial Technology Institute which comes under the Technology and
Research Ministry has invented a new variety of edible wax that could be
used to preserve and protect fruits and vegetables more effectively to
keep them fresh during the journey from the farm to the household.
The new wax, an alternative to expensive imported varieties, will
minimise damage during transportation, preserve the products for long
hours and prevent damage due to micro-organisms.
The product can also delay the natural process of fruit ripening. It
can be applied after the harvest, prior to sending them to distribution
centres.
The ITI said the product has been manufactured with natural food
ingredients and hence it will have no effect on human health. This has
been proven by the ITI research team.
A workshop was held recently at the ITI to introduce the new product,
popularize its use and educate correct method of application among
members of the agricultural sector.
Officers attached to Vidatha Centres who educate farmers and
villagers of the new agricultural technologies attended the workshop.
The seminar also briefed them on the new techniques that can be used by
farmers to minimise post harvest waste.
It was told a large proportion of the fruits and vegetables wasted
during transport could be saved if this product is popularised among the
farming community.
Dr. Shanthi Alwis, Dr. Neville Amunugoda, Shiranthi Perera and Dr.
Ranjani de Alwis conducted the seminar.
