The US resolution against Sri Lanka was passed by the majority vote at the UNHRC sessions. Water Supply and Drainage Minister and MEP leader Dinesh Gunawardena, Acting Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Senior Lawyer Gomin Dayasiri comment on the UNHRC vote:

Shed petty differences

Q: How should we react to the UNHRC vote on the American resolution.

A: The USA and her allies did not acknowledge the importance of Sri Lanka’s development activities to ensure the well-being of the inhabitants in the North and the East.

It is time for all Sri Lankans to shed their petty differences and unite to defeat the conspiracy directed at destroying our independence and sovereignty.

Credibility not marketed adequately in global arena

Q: What really went wrong in our bid to win the UNHRC resolution.

A: The problem we face is more fundamental. Although we had acquired credibility internationally it had not been marketed adequately for global spread. It is not easy to gun down Sri Lanka despite massive international media lobbying. A few of our expatriate intellectuals have done their utmost for the cause of the motherland. Some of our foreign missions in key regions have failed miserably in lobbying the country.

Mutual goodwill between India and US should be strengthened

Q: Should we not further strengthen our rapport with USA and India notwithstanding the UNHRC vote.

A: Sri Lanka fully understands India’s domestic political issues and how it has been influencing the Indian Government.

We have no problem whatsoever with the USA. We should further strengthen the mutual goodwill and relations with both the US and India.
