Beware of conmen who collect money for disabled

Police have warned the public to beware of those who deceive the public by collecting money on behalf of disabled and sick persons, Police Media Spokesman SP, Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.

Chilaw police took into custody four men and women engaged in collecting money on behalf of sick persons near the Kappiyamulle Mosque in the absence of a sick persons.

However, the van which the suspects used to collect money could not be seized by the police as it left while the suspects were being questioned by the police.

According to the police, the suspects were arrested in Kaduwela, Athurugiriya, Hindalgala and Malwana and Passara.

They were not legally authorised to collect funds from the public.

Documents, letters, and raffle ticket books along with cash Rs. 5,760 which was in the possession of the suspects were also seized by the police.

The suspects will be produced before the Chilaw Magistrate, police said.
