ICC chief confident of corruption free Twenty20 World Cup

The ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat expressed his confidence of a corruption free Twenty20 World Cup which will take place from September 18 to October 7, 2012 in Sri Lanka. Logart said that “all of the protocols and procedures that we engage when it comes to a global event from the anti-corruption point of you will be there, we are very, very stringent and will not take anything lightly so all the procedures and process that we have so far the ICC is concern will be placed at the competition.”

The ICC Twenty20 World Cup ticket sales were launched at Hotel Taj Samudra yesterday (From left:) Nishantha Ranatunga (Secretary SLC), Upali Dharmadasa (President SLC), Haroon Lorgat (ICC Chief Executive), Upeka Nell (Tournament Director ICC T20, 2012) posing with the T20 men's and women's World Cup. The event will be staged in Sri Lanka from September 18 to October 7, 2012. The tournament will be conducted at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium Hambantota, Pallekelle and R. Premadasa Stadium, Khettarama. Pic: Kavindra Perera

“It will be the fourth edition of the T20 World Cup that will staged for the first time in Sri Lanka.

The previous tournaments were held in South Africa (2007) which India won the inaugural one. The second edition was held in England in 2009 where Pakistan emerged victorious and the third one was held in the following year due to reshaping the schedules in the West Indies in 2010 which England, incidentally won their first global event.

This is the 4th World Twenty 20 event to be hosted in Sri Lanka. Of course Sri Lanka has still to win the T20 World title, unlike some other full member countries who do have a global title, world cup winners previously Sri Lanka will fancy it' chances in picking up another ICC global event”, said Lorgat.

He further said that there is no doubt about the love and the passion for the game in this part of the world as the Sri Lankans have proved over and over how much this game means to them. The quality in the team itself offers that kind of suggestion.

But when one country plays another there is no getting away from the fact that provides the best kind of passion and excitement and the support that we see when these global events are played it is unmatched by any others and expected another spectacular event as a fact that Sri Lanka has hosted the World Cup so successfully not so long ago and all in good stead most of the arrangements are well and truly underway as we don't foresee any major challenges as the infrastructure is already in place which was done for the World Cup which makes certainly life easier in staging this World T20 event. The experience and the expertise is all available and we don't see any major issue to stage the event.

This event is an introduction of a joint men's and women's event. The World Twenty20 is special from that point of view because it brings the women's game right up on the global stage. It is important for the development of the women's game. One of the fastest growths that is issuing in global cricket is female participation.
