Musaeus College, Colombo, put up a sterling display to upset all
predictions to win the all island schools under-15 girls hockey
championship by defeating the strong St. Anthony’s Girls College 2-0 in
the finals of the tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey
Association and worked off at Sir Albert F. Peiris Stadium, Nattandiya.
At the breather Musaeus College were ahead leading 1-0.
This was also first ever hockey title won by the girls from Musaeus
College better known in the field of table tennis, badminton and
athletics in which they produced the junior national champion in Ruvini
Kannagara last month.
A total of 23 school teams participated in this hockey championship
which had the best from Kandy, Matale and Colombo and the stickers from
Musaeus College stamped their class by winning the ‘plum’ which will
take them to better performances in the future.
The game started on a brisk note with the Antonian girls from Kandy
being more on the offensive in the start but the Musaeus stickers
countered them by better positional play and did not allow their
opponents to breach their defence.
With the backs combining well with the forwards, the Musaeus College
stickers drew first blood in the 10th minute of the initial half when
centre half Dinithi Sathyapala receiving a long pass from one of the
halves drove in to sound the boards.
With this the two teams changed ends. But the girls from Musaeus
College did not rest in their laurels and knew that an equaliser by
their opponents could make things difficult for them.
