Chennai airport foils Lankan woman's smuggling attempt
An attempt by a 45-year-old Sri Lankan woman to smuggle 800 grams of
gold into Chennai was foiled by Customs officials in the Chennai Airport
on Friday. Airport sources said, the woman, hailing from Trincomalee in
Sri Lanka, arrived here in the evening along with her son and
daughter-in-law.
Customs officials on suspicion intercepted her and asked whether she
was carrying any dutiable items. The woman replied that her son and
daughter-in-law were newly married and they had come to Chennai on a
holiday.
Not satisfied with her reply, the officials checked the jewellery she
was wearing. They were all found to be wearing crudely made gold rings
in the shape of bangles. The two women were wearing six pieces each.
When Customs officials asked her about the ornaments, she said a
group asked them to carry the ornaments to Chennai and hand them over to
somebody outside the airport for monetary consideration. Following this,
the authorities seized the 12 ornaments, weighing 800 grams, and valued
at Rs.22 lakhs. The two women were arrested.
