Poson season: public warned against pollution
by Ananda KANNANGARA
The Mihintale Poson Festivities Committee yesterday warned the public
visiting Mihintale and Anuradhapura during the forthcoming Poson season
to refrain from throwing polythene papers, plastic bottles and other
litter which cause environmental pollution in the sacred area. Committee
Chairman and Government Agent Anuradhapura, Mahinda Seneviratne told the
Sunday Observer that stern action will be taken against those who
violate these regulations.
In addition, those who run dansalas should make arrangements to
dispose the litter and other refuse in a proper manner for the benefit
of those visiting the sacred areas during this period.
It is reported that over 100,000 devotees will observe Sil at the
Sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and Mihintale sacred sites, while over
150,000 people are expected in the sacred area during the Poson season
which begins on June 1.
