BASL endorses Justice Ministry move

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has endorsed the move of the Ministry of Justice to re-introduce an amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code enabling the Police to detain suspects who are involved in grave crimes for a period of 48 hours.

A news release issued by the BASL said the Council of the BASL discussed this matter and the Bar Association, being a responsible organisation in the maintenance of law and order in the country, and also being a stakeholder in the administration of Justice, endorsed the Bill as it would be beneficial to society at large. The list of grave crimes is also inserted in the proposed Bill to be submitted to the Parliament by the Minister of Justice.

The Members of the Council, said that they are not happy about some Police officers who are inclined to torture suspects in criminal cases.
