Shanthini says leader needs push

Chairperson of the UNP’s Lakvanitha Peramuna Shanthini Kongahage said yesterday that the lack of support to the party leadership from the rest of its members has caused UNP’s back to back election defeats.

She said that UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was not the only person to lose at elections and certain UNP seniors are not providing the required “push” for the “momentum” generated by Wickremesinghe. Speaking at a meeting at Akmeemana, Mrs. Kongahage asserted that elections cannot be won alone.

“It is like a relay in athletic race. You need the support from rest of the members in that team. No matter how good one athlete performs but the race cannot be won if the rest don’t provide necessary support. It is similar in politics and the all seniors must support our leader, if UNP is to win future elections,” she said.
