The elderly population in Sri Lanka is over 11 percent of the total population. There is a sharp increase.

The programs to improve the well-being of elders are vital and welcome news to all sections of society.

 

Taking care of elders - social obligation

Q: A parliamentary Act on the rights of elders was presented recently what made you to present such an act at this moment?

A: It is a social obligation to look after elders and ensure their well-being. It manifests the rich heritage of society. This Act made the registration of Elders Homes compulsory. A series of welfare activities such as distribution of spectacles, discounts on medicare and priority in similar matters have been introduced.

 

Ensure well-being of elders

Q: Have you any proposal to upgrade the social life of the elders?

A: The elderly population is on the increase and so are their problems as well . It is the responsibility of the Government as well as society to ensure the well-being of elders. We shall also recognise the Elders Organisations which ensure quality service.

 

Extend Rs 1,000 to plantation sector

Q: The life of the plantation sector is not all that satisfactory. Have you got any proposal to improve there lot?

A: The grant of Rs. 1000 monthly to elders over 70 years as proposed by the Government should be extended to the plantation sector. The regulations presented to Parliament by the Social Services Minister are praiseworthy. The special Identity Cards issued to elders have been instrumental in helping them in their various activities.
